What grades do you perform for?

Our programs are designed for pre-k through fifth grade. Older and younger children will enjoy the program as well, but we politely request that a parent or guardian accompany children 4 and under at library programs.

For an additional fee, we offer preschools a special 15-minute demonstration for the toddlers.

What size groups for you perform for?

We perform for audiences of up to 300. If you have more than 300 people, you must schedule multiple programs. This allows for the maximum amount of audience participation and interaction.

There is no minimum number of children we can perform for. Smaller groups allow for much more interaction and individual attention.

How long is the program?

Each ScienceTellers program is about 45 minutes long.

Preschools have the option of purchasing a separate 15-minute demonstration for the toddlers, to be performed immediately before or after the standard 45-minute ScienceTellers show.

Birthday parties run longer — about an hour — because we make slime for all the guests after the show. Making slime takes about 10-15 minutes, depending on the size of the group.

What stories do you tell?

Your ScienceTeller will relay a fun, original story, broken up into short chapters. Each chapter has an exciting visual or audial element that we bring to life through a corresponding science experiment.

Each year we write a brand new story that is appropriate for the whole family. The stories always are easy to follow, suspenseful and action-based, to keep children of all ages engaged.

There are no costumes, set pieces or props. Instead, the ScienceTeller will utilize voice, expression and pantomime to transport the audience into the adventure. The ScienceTeller will also use the entire performance space, so even kids in the back will get a front-row view!

What science experiments do you do?

Each program contains seven exciting, visual science experiments that we conduct with the help of audience volunteers. We conduct most experiments twice, allowing the audience to participate actively in the scientific process of changing variables, making predictions and comparing test results.

The science portion of the program is designed around various Next Generation Science Standards concepts, so the content of the show corresponds with curriculum in the classroom. For most kids the show will be a healthy mixture of familiar concepts and new material within the fields of physics and chemistry.

Our intention is not to try to replicate or replace the learning the takes place in the classroom. ScienceTellers is just one exposure of many that children will have to this material throughout their academic careers. The ultimate purpose of our program is to demonstrate that science is accessible and fun, and that it is something anyone can do.

How many volunteers can participate?

Each ScienceTellers program will involve as many audience volunteers as safely possible. Most programs will have about 20 kids help conduct experiments with us. Depending on several factors, your ScienceTeller may, at their discretion, choose to incorporate fewer volunteers for safety reasons.

How do you choose your volunteers?

Selecting volunteers while performing a show and managing the crowd is an art! Our ScienceTellers do their best to make this process fair and fun for everyone by giving the kids specific instructions to follow in order to be picked. Unfortunately, not every child can be picked for every experiment. Your ScienceTeller is trained to select volunteers that will help guarantee each experiment is safe, successful and enjoyable for all.

Because it's often impossible to have every child in the audience be a volunteer, we make sure that there are many other ways to participate in the show:

  1. All the experiments in the show are visually exciting, so they are as much fun to watch as they are to conduct.
  2. When possible, we bring experiments out into the crowd for everyone to experience up close.
  3. Each program features tons of call-and-response, during which the entire audience gets to call out or count down in unison.

If your child doesn't get to picked to volunteer, please bring them up after the show! The ScienceTeller will be more than happy to chat with them, pose for a photo and show them the equipment up close. Also consider coming to another ScienceTellers performance to try again. :)

How do I book a program?

First, select your program type here: www.sciencetellers.com/booking. Then fill out a booking request form and provide as much information as you can.

Melody, our super awesome office manager, will get back to you within 24-48 hours. Once she has everything she needs from you and we've confirmed there's a ScienceTeller available in your area, we will put you into our calendar and email you an invoice.

As we continue to grow and expand, the booking request form has become the fastest and most efficient way for us to handle the incredible volume of programs we perform each year. Phone calls take a long time and can result in errors or misunderstandings. Thank you for your cooperation!

Can I get a discount?

Absolutely! If you are an organization like a school or library, you can save money by booking multiple programs on the same day, or by booking together with other schools or libraries in your immediate area. In order to receive the discount, the programs must be performed on the same day by the same ScienceTeller.

On the booking request form, please check the box that says you are interested in block-booking (libraries) or sharing a day of programming (schools).

Can I request a specific ScienceTeller?

You can ask in the "details and notes" section of the booking request form, but we cannot promise that your favorite ScienceTeller will be available for a specific date, time or location. What we can promise, however, is that all our ScienceTellers are trained to create an unforgettable experience for you and your audience!

Can you perform in my state?

We are constantly expanding our coverage and our performers love to travel. It may be possible to schedule a program for you. Tell us where you are and what you're looking for, and we'll see what we can do to make it work! Depending on the distance, we may need to charge a travel fee to cover travel and lodging expenses. Contact us at info@sciencetellers.com to see if it's a possibility. If so, we'll have you fill out a booking request form to get the ball rolling.

Am I expected to tip the performer?

Gratuity is never expected but is graciously accepted! Please feel free to tip your ScienceTeller if they went above and beyond to provide an excellent experience. Most of our ScienceTellers are working actors or balance multiple side jobs to make ends meet, so every tip is sincerely appreciated. For your reference, the average tip is between $20-$60.

When will you arrive to set up?

Your ScienceTeller will arrive about 45-60 minutes before the start time to say hi and start getting ready.

In the event that your ScienceTeller will be late due to unforeseen traffic or an accident on the roadway, they will call you right away to provide an updated arrival time. This is why it's important to provide us with your cell phone number at the time of booking.

The show can actually be set up very quickly, so even if the performer is delayed, they can often still start the show on time.

What are your show requirements?

On the day of the show, here is what we need from you:

  1. Two rectangular tables, ideally about four feet long each.
  2. A garbage can with a heavy-duty plastic liner.
  3. An electrical outlet.
  4. Access to a kitchen/utility sink. (The sink does NOT need to be in the same room as the show.)

What is your preferred room setup?

We are flexible and will tailor our setup to your specific venue and preferences. However, here is our ideal room setup:

  1. Performer on the same level as the audience. (In a raked auditorium with fixed seats, the ScienceTeller may choose to perform on the stage so that everyone can see. However, we strongly prefer to perform in a room where the ScienceTeller can be on the same level as the children.)
  2. Performance area of at least 8 feet wide by 10 feet deep.
  3. Children seated on the floor.
  4. Chairs for adults in the back and/or on the sides.
  5. A center aisle running through the audience. We bring blue painter's tape to mark the performance area and the center aisle (see photo).

Can you perform outside?

For the best possible experience, we strongly prefer to perform indoors. It is much easier for the audience to see and hear, and there are fewer distractions. Also, things like sunlight and wind can negatively affect the experiments.

Of course, if you must have the program outside, we will accommodate your request. We need access to electricity for our portable sound system and some experiments, so we may need an extension cord from you. If it is very hot or humid outside, please also provide your ScienceTeller with a bottle of cold water. (It's at least ten degrees warmer under the labcoat!)

Do you need a sound system?

Your ScienceTeller will provide their own PA system with wireless microphone. For very small groups or intimate settings, the ScienceTeller may choose not to use the sound system at all, but they will always have it just in case.
