On the day of the show, here is what we need from you:
- Two rectangular tables, ideally about four feet long each.
- A large garbage can with a heavy-duty liner.
- A electrical outlet.
- Tap water from a kitchen or utility sink. (Dry ice shows require HOT water.)
Here is our preferred room setup:
- Performer on the same level as the audience (not on a stage).
- Performance area of at least 8 feet wide by 8 feet deep.
- Children seated on the floor.
- Chairs for adults in the back or on the sides.
- A center aisle running through the audience.
We bring blue painter's tape to mark the performance area and the center aisle.
We are flexible and will tailor our setup to your specific venue and preferences.
Is there anything else you need from us after booking?
A week before the show, we will send you an email reminder with all the program details. Please reply to confirm that all the details are correct. If anything doesn't look right, or if you don't hear from us a week before the program, contact the office right away so we can straighten it out.
Can you perform outside?
Ideally, no. For the best possible performance, we strongly prefer to perform indoors. It is much easier for the audience to see and hear, and there are fewer distractions. Also, things like sunlight and wind can negatively affect the experiments.
If you must have the program outside, we will accommodate your request. We need access to electricity for our portable sound system and some experiments, so we may need an extension cord from you.
Do you need a sound system?
We will provide our own PA system with wireless microphone. For very small groups or intimate settings, the performer may not even need to use the sound system at all, but they will always bring it just in case.
When will you arrive to set up?
We will arrive about 45-60 minutes before the start time to introduce ourselves and start getting ready.
Do we give the check to the performer?
No. Birthday parties and pre-schools are required to pay by credit card before or on the day of the performance. All other customers can mail a check directly to our billing office. Our performers cannot accept checks. Mail payment to:
P.O. BOX 6741
Can we get a discount?
Absolutely! If you are an organization like a school or library, you can save money by booking multiple programs on the same day, or by booking together with other schools or libraries in your immediate area. In order to receive the discount, the programs must be performed on the same day.
For regular and discounted rates, fill out a Booking Request Form. You can also contact the office at email@example.com or 908-334-2525.
Is a deposit required?
A $75 deposit is required for birthday parties and pre-schools upon booking to reserve your performance date and time. The balance is due the day of the program by credit card.
At this time, no deposit is required for schools, libraries, scouts, recreation or after school programs.
Are we expected to tip the performer?
Gratuity is never expected but is graciously accepted. Feel free to tip your Scienceteller if he or she went above and beyond to do an excellent job. An average tip for a birthday party is between $20-$60.
What grades do you perform for?
We have programs designed for pre-k through fifth grade. Older kids in the audience will still be able to enjoy themselves, too. We have a 15-minute demonstration for toddlers available as an add-on for our pre-school programs.
How long is each program?
Every Sciencetellers show is about 45 minutes long. Birthday parties run longer — about an hour — because we make slime for all the guests. Making slime takes about 15 minutes, depending on the size of the group.
What size groups do you perform for?
We perform for audiences of 1 to 300. If you have more than 300 people, you must schedule multiple programs. This allows for the maximum amount of audience participation and interaction.
Can we request a specific performer?
We cannot promise that your favorite Scienceteller will be available for a specific date, time or location. What we can promise, however, is that all our Sciencetellers are trained to create an unforgettable experience for you and your audience!
Can you perform in our state?
We are constantly expanding our coverage and our performers love to travel. It may be possible to schedule a program for you. Tell us where you are and what you're looking for, and we'll see what we can do to make it work! Depending on the distance, we may need to charge a travel fee to cover travel and lodging expenses. Start by filling out a Booking Request Form. You can also contact the office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 908-334-2525.
